Conditional Registration

If an immigrant spouse or child enters the U.S. through marriage to a U.S. citizen, before the marriage's second anniversary, those immigrants will be conditional residents of the U.S. To remove this conditional status and obtain permanent resident status, the U.S. citizen petitioner must file I-751 with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security(DHS), Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS), www.uscis.gov. Immigrants who are conditional residents will have "CR" noted on their I-551 alien registration cards ("green cards"), which will also have a two year validity period.

If an alien is unable to file the I-751 joint petition together with his or her spouse because of a breakdown in the marriage, s/he may file an I-752 Application for Waiver of Requirement to File Joint Petition for Removal of Conditions prior to the expiration date on the I-551 ("green") card.
