Interview Procedures

What to expect on the day of your nonimmigrant visa (NIV) interview…

ENTRY PROCESSING

1)  Please fall in line approximately 30 minutes before your scheduled interview at the NIV entrance on the south side of the U.S. Embassy.

2)  All applicants must pass through security, which includes putting your personal belongings through an x-ray machine and going through a metal detector.  Please note that electronic devices (radios, recorders, cameraphones, computers, PDAs, cameras, walkmans, etc.), liquid containers, spray devices, suitcases, knives, sharp objects and any dangerous items are prohibited.  Bringing such items delay entry into the U.S. Embassy, so we ask that applicants do not bring such items.  Cameraphones and cameras must be checked at the entrance.  You will be given a plastic number ticket when you check your cameraphone and/or camera.  Please present your plastic number ticket as you leave to retrieve your checked item(s).

PROCESSING ON THE 1st FLOOR

3)  After passing through security, if you have not completed a courier slip, please do so at the courier slip counter.

  

4a)  Please queue up at the desks so that our staff can perform an initial check on your documents.  This includes, at a minimum, that your passport has at least six months validity and that you have fully completed your application.
4b) Officials (A, G, C3 visa applicants), emergency applicants and applicants coming in for visa corrections should proceed directly to Window #1 on the first floor after passing through security.
4c)  Applicants applying for an E, H, L, O, P, Q visa and applicants applying through our BRP/URP/AMCHAM should go directly to the third floor to begin processing.

5)  After preliminary screening, please stay in the queue.  If you come with a group or as a family, please be sure to tell our staff.  You will be called to intake windows so that we can verify that the information on your application form matches the information that was entered into the appointment and capture your visa photo into our computer system.
 

 

Submit application, passport & appointment confirmation.

F/M/J applicants also submit their I-20/DS-2019.



 

6) Next, please proceed to windows to be fingers canned.  You will be asked to Place four left hand fingers flatly on the green square as shown.  Repeat this procedure with your right hand fingers.  Place thumbs together on the lower half of the green square as shown.

     

 1. First Left hand, place four left fingers

  2. Secondly right hand, place four right fingers  3. Then place two thumbs 



 

 

Number ticket with color zone.

7) After you are finger scanned, you will be given a ticket with a number and color zone (red, green, yellow or blue).


 

 

 


PROCESSING ON THE 2nd FLOOR

8a)  Please proceed to the second floor using the stairs to the left of the finger scanning windows and go to the color zone indicated on your ticket.  The color zones are demarcated by hanging signs from the ceiling and the interview windows are painted in the corresponding color.

8b)  If you need assistance, a greeter will be present to assist you.

8c) Sit in your color zone and wait for your number to appear above one of the interview windows.

9)  When your number appears, please go to that window for your interview with all your required documents.  We may confirm your identity by taking a single print before interviews.  Normally, interviews only last one to two minutes.  The consular officer will tell you the results of your application at the end of your interview.

 

10)  If you are found eligible, your visaed passport will be delivered to you via courier in approximately 3-5 working days.
