Renewal for Adults

Renewing an Adult Passport without a Personal Appearance

You can renew your existing passport without a personal appearance at the Embassy if:

  • You are age 16 or over and

  • You can submit your most recent passport, and

  • Your most recent U.S. passport had a validity of 10 years, and 

  • You were issued your most recent U.S. passport at age 16 or older and within the past 15 years, and 

  • Your name will remain the same as on your most recent passport.

If you are not eligible to apply for your passport by mail, you must appear at the Embassy personally and execute a passport application. Follow this link for more details.

Members of the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea should contact their Executive Office for details on how AmCham can assist you in renewing your passport without a personal appearance.

Please read on for instructions on how to renew your passport without a personal appearance at the Embassy!

What You'll Need to Apply by Mail

  • Application Form DS-82
    Application form DS-82. The online version of this form includes instructions on the back side written for use in the U.S. which do not apply to your application in Seoul. Adult applicants who may use form DS-82 do not have to appear in person at the Embassy.   When completing a passport application, please include the city in the "Place of Birth" section.  For persons born in the U.S., list the city and state of birth.  For persons born outside the U.S., include the city and country of birth.
  • Your previous U.S. passport.
  • A way for us to return your passport to you (see below).
  • One passport photograph: Sized 2" X 2" (or 5 cm X 5 cm) with a white/light background. 
  • Application Fee
    $75.00. If you are applying in person, you can pay the fee in U.S. Dollars, Korean Won or credit cards.

How to Pay the Fee by Mail

You can pay the fee in one of two ways:

Korea Exchange Bank (KEB)
You can pay the $75 fee at any Korea Exchange Bank location by asking for a "U.S. Dollars Money Order", known as a mihwa-song-guem-supyo in Korean. The money order you'll receive looks like this.



This money order must be made payable to "CASHIER FMC U.S. EMBASSY SEOUL".
The price of the money order, in addition to the $75, is W5000 regardless of whether you hold an account at KEB or not.

KEB has branches throughout Korea. Check their website, or contact their Foreign Customer Team at 02-729-0919, 02-729-0288, FAX 02-773-3144.

Citi bank
You can pay the $75 fee at any Citi Bank location by asking for a "U.S. Dollars Money Order", known as a mihwa-song-guem-supyo in Korean. The money order you'll receive looks like this.




This money order must be made payable to "CASHIER FMC U.S. EMBASSY SEOUL".

The price of the money order, in addition to the $75, is W5000. For non-account holders the fee is W13,000.

Citibank has offices only in the Seoul and Pusan areas.

How to Get Your Application Materials to Us

By Courier (non-APO addresses only)
Two courier companies provide round-trip service, bringing your materials to us then bringing your new passport back to your door. The couriers also provide on-line tracking of your passport to and from the Embassy.

To arrange for a pick up,

Call ILYANG at 1588-0002, (02) 3277-9531-2, or refer to their web site.

Call HANJIN at 1588-0011, (02) 751-7546, or refer to their web site.

Contact the courier companies directly to find which price covers your area. The couriers may also request payment in advance, or on a COD basis. Contact them directly for more details.

Drop Off at the Military Passport Accepting Agency (USFK personnel only)
We strongly encourage you to use the Military Passport Acceptance Agency located on your base. 

Drop Off
You or someone you ask can drop off your materials at the Embassy during normal business hours (M, T, W, TH and F, 9:00-11:30 and 1:30-3:30). We are closed on Wednesday afternoons and on both U.S. and Korean holidays.

How to Get Your New Passport Returned to You

By Courier (non-APO addresses only)

The easiest way to have your new passport returned to you is by courier, using the two-way system described above. This method means that you never need visit the Embassy at all to renew your passport. The couriers also provide on-line tracking of your passport to and from the Embassy.

You can also take advantage of the courier system for a one-way trip, dropping off your application materials (or asking a friend, employee or agent to do so) and filling out a one-way courier delivery slip available in our lobby. Once the passport is issued, we will use the delivery slip to return your passport to you. Delivery charges are paid COD. The courier companies cannot deliver to APO addresses.

Drop Off at the Military Passport Accepting Agency (USFK personnel only)
We do not return passports via the APO.  You can pick up your passport at the nearest Military passport Acceptance Agency.

Pick up in Person
While we cannot produce passports while-you-wait, you can arrange with us to pick up your finished passport.  Pickup must be made in person by the passport holder. for safety's sake, you cannot ask a friend or colleague to pick up the passport on your behalf.
