Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  1. How do I save my online application? Can I stop in the middle of the application process and return to it later?

    You can save your application or return to a partially completed application. When you begin a new DS-160, you will be issued a unique application identification (ID) number after selecting and answering a security question. Once you have your application ID number and have selected and answered a security question, you may exit the DS-160 application and return to it later. You must have your application ID to return to your application. To save your DS-160 to the Consular Electronic Application Center website, click the “Next” button at the bottom of each page you complete. You have 30 days to return to a partially completed application. To access your application after 30 days, you must save it to your computer hard drive or a disk, as explained in the below.
  2. What if I failed to upload a digital photo?

    You must try to upload a photo. If you are unsuccessful, an “X” will appear in the box where the photo should be on the oline upload page. You can either try to upload a photo again or click the “CONTINUE WITHOUT A PHOTO” button to continue without uploading a photo. (Please click here for a sample of this page.) Please note that all applicants must submit one printed photo, meeting specific requirements, along with the online DS-160 confirmation page at their interview. This is particularly Important if you are unable to successfully upload your own photo.

  3. After filling out the online DS-160 application, how do I save my application to my computer?

    To save your application to your computer hard drive, you need to click the SAVE button at the bottom center of the application page then select the “SAVE APPLICATION FILE” button. Application files will be saved as DAT files. Please click here for a sample (graphic representation) of where the save button is located. 

  4. How do I access my previously saved application?

    First, open the online DS-160 website, and click the “UPLOAD A PREVIOUS APPLICATION” button at the bottom of the page. You must be on the DS-160 webpage to be able to open the file. Saved application files cannot be opened outside of the online DS-160 website. Please click here for a sample of how to access your previously saved application. Additionally, we recommend you email yourself a copy of your completed DS-160 application.

  5. What is the visa number?

    The visa number can be found on your previous visa in red, located towards the bottom right side of the visa. Please click here for a picture showing where the visa number located.

  6. How do I select a purpose of travel that is not covered in the list?

    It is very important to choose the correct classification from the “PURPOSE OF TRAVEL TO U.S.” pull-down menu in the Travel Information section. If your purpose of travel is not covered in the list, click on “OTHER” for a further drop-down list of choices. Please click here for a sample of this screen.

  7. What do I need to bring with me to the interview?

    You must bring your printed CONFIRMATION PAGE, proof of payment and one additional photo. Without the confirmation page, we are unable to process your visa application. You do not need to bring your entire application.Please click here for a sample confirmation page.
