Getting Married
What You'll Need to Prepare for the K-1 Interview
Here are some additional details on what you and your fiancé/fiancée in Korea will need to prepare for the K-1 interview.
Medical Check
Your fiancé/fiancée will require a medical examination by an Embassy-approved physician. Full details, including a list of approved medical facilities, will be sent by mail. The medical examination costs approximately 120,000 won for adults and 80,000 won for children under fifteen (15). If any immunizations are required there is an additional charge. Your fiancé/fiancée should not undertake the medical examination until after s/he has received the appropriate forms from the U.S. Embassy.
You can learn even more about the medical check, or required immunizations, elsewhere on our site.
Police Check
If your fiancé/fiancée has stayed in places other than the U.S. or Korea for six months or more after the age of sixteen, a police certificate from the proper authorities in those countries is also required. Police certificates are not required from other countries of residence unless your fiancé/fiancée's residence was in excess of one year after age 16.
Complete the I-134
This form is filled out by the American partner to demonstrate his/her financial ability to support the fiancé/fiancée. We'll send an I-134 at the appropriate time, but if you'd like to see the form now, follow this link to all CIS forms.
(You may hear of a similar form, the I-864 (Affidavit of Support). This form is similar to the I-134 you'll need for the K-1 visa. The I-864 is not needed when your fiancé/fiancée applies for the K-1 visa. You will however have to submit an I-864 to the BCIS at the time of adjustment of status in the United States, however.)
Korean Emigration Passport
Your fiancé/fiancée will need a special passport. S/he can obtain a Korean emigration passport from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Overseas Residents and Immigration Division, Room 403, Daehan Jae-Boheom Building, 80 Susong-Dong Jongro-Gu, Seoul. The Embassy cannot assist in obtaining this passport.
